Mid American Credit Union opens northeast branch

Mid American Credit Union on Monday opened its northeast branch ? the first office the $196 million credit union has built in more than a decade.

The 4,000-square-foot building at the southwest corner of 29th and Webb had a soft opening Monday, with staff members finishing up their final training.

The building, designed by Kraybill Architect and built by Dondlinger & Sons Construction, mimics the appearance of the credit union?s main office at 8404 W. Kellogg Drive.

Mid American president Jim Holt said officials wanted the building to be easily identifiable to passersby as a Mid American facility. And that?s why it features the familiar, nearly two-story high rotunda on the front of the building.

While the facility resembles its west Kellogg sibling on the outside, it is much different on the inside. Instead of traditional teller counters, members and guests are greeted at the door and taken by a staff member to one of two stations where the member service representative ? Mid American does not call them tellers ? helps them with their transaction or other request. There is nothing physically separating the service rep and the customer.

Holt said the idea behind the design is to enhance the relationship between members and Mid American staff. Staff working at the branch have also been trained to serve as consultants to members and the staff member who greets the member entering the branch will stay with him or her until the customer?s business is completed.

?It?s a little more relationship oriented,? Holt said.

The new branch can also be used by members of Catholic Family Federal Credit Union and Cessna Employees Credit Union, which have shared-branching agreements with Mid American. Mid American owns the buildings and employs the staff. CFFCU and CECU pay Mid American a per-transaction fee when their members use the branch.

The branch also houses an 800-square-foot cafe that will be called Savories Coffee Shop. Owner Shawn Blattner said it will serve a variety of coffees and tea and fresh doughnuts and pastries made by Delano Bakery. Blattner said the shop, which will also offer free Wi-Fi, will open Feb. 11.
