Air India crisis: Pilots seek PM, Sonia's intervention

Air IndiaAgitating Air India [ Images ] pilots on Thursday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [ Images ] and the Congress top brass to step in to resolve the impasse over the 52-day long strike, as the condition of some of them on protest fast worsened.

The Indian Pilots' Guild, which is spearheading the agitation and the five-day-old hunger strike, shot off letters to Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi [ Images ] and general secretary Rahul Gandhi [ Images ], seeking their 'urgent intervention to resolve the prolonged agitation'.

With three pilots, who were on hunger strike since Sunday, being hospitalised yesterday following deterioration in their health, the condition of a few more in Delhi [ Images ] and Mumbai [ Images ] worsened.

The agitators got a shot in their arm with the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations extending support to them and urging aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation to 'make a positive contribution towards ending this dispute' by bringing both sides to the negotiating table.

In a letter to DGCA chief E K Bharat Bhushan, IFALPA President Capt Don Wykoff said, "This is a very sad situation that is showing no signs of resolution and is surely in no one's interests.

"Therefore, whilst it is not our role to sit in judgement as to the rights and wrongs of the dispute that seem centred on issues arising from the Air India and Indian Airlines merger, we fell a duty to make every effort to find a solution which is both fair and acceptable to both sides."

Castigating the Air India management for maintaining 'a stony silence' on finding a resolution to the prolonged imbroglio, IPG Joint Secretary Tauseef H Mukadam said in that the well-being of the airline was "essential if the aviation industry has to be an engine of economic growth".

"Sadly, the (Civil Aviation) Ministry and the Air India management have proven to be incapable of handling the affairs of Air India," he said in identical letters.

Mukadam also alleged that there was 'a major disconnect' between the ministry and the airline management on the issues raised in the agitation.

Over 400 IPG pilots, who are on strike since May 7, launched an indefinite hunger strike from Sunday to demand withdrawal of sack orders against 101 pilots and better career progression prospects.

Air India is estimated to have lost about Rs 530 crore (Rs 5.3 billion) because of the agitation.

While the agitators have accused the management of not being keen to resolve the impasse by 'steadfastly refusing' to talk to them, the government has made it clear that they should return to work unconditionally.

With their indefinite hunger strike in Delhi and Mumbai continuing since Sunday, two among 12 pilots in Mumbai and one of the 15 in Delhi were hospitalised yesterday, with pilots saying that the physical condition of a few more had worsened.

The IPG has already said that 'for the sake of the passengers, we are willing to walk the extra mile to find a resolution to this dispute, we hope that the Ministry and the AI management feels the same way.'

Recalling that in 1993, the erstwhile Indian Airlines management had replaced its striking pilots with those from a foreign airline and a Tupolev-154 aircraft had crashed at the Delhi airport, the IPG claimed that the management had then immediately started talks with the agitators.

"In the context of the current agitation, is the ministry and the AI management waiting for such a disaster before they start talking to the pilots," the IPG said in a statement.

The airline, which has been operating a curtailed international schedule, plans to gradually restore normalcy in its long-haul operations. While it resumed operations to Tokyo and Shanghai last week, it plans to launch flights to Hong Kong which were stopped due to the pilots' strike.

It is also planning to start a new flight to Kuala Lumpur and resume Seoul-Osaka operations in August and fly to Australia [ Images ] by September end.

Dr. Ewa Kleczyk on Business, the Pharmaceutical Industry and ...

InTech, in its mission to not only put the highlights on its open access, scientific books but on its perspective authors as well, talked to Dr. Ewa Kleczyk, author of the chapters ?Risk Management in the Development of New Products in the Pharmaceutical Industry? (from the book ?Risk Management Trends?, Giancarlo Nota, 2011), ?The Determinants of Corporate Debt Maturity Structure? (from the book ?Business Dynamics in the 21st Century?, Chee-Heong Quah, and Ong Lin Dar, 2012) and co-author with Darrell J. Bosch of ?Households? Preferences for Plumbing Materials? (from the book ?Corrosion Resistance?, Hong Shih, 2012).

Risk Management Trends

Risk Management Trends

Dr. Kleczyk obtained her PhD in Economics from Virginia Tech in 2008 and is currently employed as the?Senior Director, Custom Analytics at ImpactRx (formerly TargetRx), firm that provides pharmaceutical and biotech companies with information regarding the criteria in product choice and adoption for their brands. Among other, Dr. Kleczyk has been awarded for her diligent work by Cambridge Who?s Who, TargetRx Excellence Award, the American Business Women?s Association and the National Association of Professional Women as Dr. Kleczyk has been known and praised for her engagement in promoting women in science.

We talked to Dr. Kleczyk about her career, her paper titled ?Risk Management in the Development of New Products in the Pharmaceutical Industry?, the controversial pharmaceutical research field in general and open access.

InTech: For how long have you been researching risk management in the pharmaceutical industry?

I have worked in the Pharmaceutical Consulting Industry for the past 6 years that includes working in the area of new product forecasting and risk management.

InTech: In your chapter ?Risk Management in the Development of New Products in the Pharmaceutical Industry? you state that deciding which new products to develop is a major challenge for many pharmaceutical companies with an excess of opportunities, but limited resources. Is it possible that these limited resources prevent some excellent new medicines to see the light of day and cure or relieve the symptoms of a certain population sub-group suffering from rare illnesses?

I think the current ways of selecting products has become subjective and cost driven, impacting negatively the types of products that are taken to the market. Some products should be brought to the market, but due to the scares resources and a number of potentially more profitable drugs in the pipeline, they might not be available for patient use.

For example, recently, Big Pharma has decided to decrease the research finding for neuroscience drugs, as they have high financial and time research costs. This unprecedented decision might result in inadequate treatments of the growing elderly population for diseases such as depression, sleep disorders, Alzheimer, and Parkinson.

Pharmaceutical Industry

?I think the current ways of selecting products has become subjective and cost driven, impacting negatively the types of products that are taken to the market.? ? Ewa Kleczyk

InTech: As you wrote, until the late 1980s, cash flows, expected returns, and net present value of income were the key variables in the decision-making process of the new drug development and investment. So according to your research, how have things changed?

The Consumer Theory and its research techniques have become an important part of the new product potential evaluation process. Understanding the product perceptions of potential consumer groups, their adoption speed and rate can help more precisely investigate the product uptake, as well as inform the investment decisions into the new drugs. However, this research should not be done in a vacuum, as this method only covers the demand aspect of the new product potential research. Joining this research with the Net Income Analysis would ensure looking at the production costs and risks, as well as the future potential sales of the product when available for use.

InTech: How would you like for your research to be perceived by risk assessment managers?

I would like my chapter to be viewed as helpful to the risk assessment managers in making new product decisions. Knowing the available evaluation methods of new product potential and knowing when to use each of the different technique should help the management in making their investment and research decisions.

?InTech: While researching this specific field, what information you came across which struck you the most?

The information that struck me the most while doing my research for this chapter was the small number of chemical molecules that become available for patient use. Only 1% researched molecules is brought to market. This finding underlines the importance of understanding the key issues of new product risk management to properly identify the chemical molecules for investment.

InTech: You are a successful researcher publishing articles in journals, books and lecturing at conferences. You are also socially active by encouraging women to pursue a career in fields such as mathematics, traditionally ruled by men. What is your perception of women in science today?

Women play a significant role in all areas in today?s world, including business, politics, academics, and sciences. It is very encouraging for many young women to know that they can be whoever they would like to be in their professional lives, as long as they work hard and are committed to their goals.

However, I think, we, the professional women, should continue mentoring and encouraging girls and young women to study mathematics, sciences, and economics, as the work is not done yet. In today?s world being a super model, reality star, and actress seems more interesting and appealing to many young women, due to greater public exposure and high financial rewards.

Promoting women in science

Promoting women in science

I think creating sponsorship or mentorship programs at educational institutions could help to promote women in sciences and business. In addition, the financial support many women receive to pursue education in these areas should continue to be distributed. The more support women get, the more likely they to follow their dreams, and become part of the scientific, political, and business cultures.

InTech: You published under the Open Access model. What is your personal opinion on unlocking scientific content to a wider audience then ever before, removing the barriers previously held by traditional scientific publishers?

Open Access Journals have revolutionized sharing of scientific information, and promoted innovation and timely dissemination of research results. Prior to the Open Access Journals, the publishing process was very lengthy, and able to reach only a limited number of readers. Today, within a couple of months (sometimes even a shorter time frame) information can be shared with a wide audience of readers. The timely research dissemination helps for quicker socialization of new concepts, as well as further improvements of researched topics.

InTech: Do you think Open Access is beneficial to all scientists and researchers?

I truly believe that the Open Access Journals are beneficial to all scientists and researchers. As mentioned above, the shorter time frame of research dissemination, and ability for sharing work with a greater audience, inspires innovation and collaboration within the scientific community. I would want to caution the journals though from publishing any documents they receive as a submission. Some of the published work is not to up to the research standards, impacting the credibility of these new venues. Greater oversight should be implemented to limit potentially low quality of work from publishing.

InTech: In terms of a more fertile, subsidised and collaborative scientific environment, how do you compare Northern America to Europe?

In the recent 30 years, the US has become the innovation centre for technology and sciences. Researchers from all over the world arrive to the US to participate in research opportunities provided by the US government as well as private companies. I believe this level of involvement is not seen in the continental Europe, although in order to compete with the US innovation, the European Union has increased research funding for European researchers to retain current and attract new talent.

InTech: What are your impressions on InTech as your Open Access publisher?

I think InTech is a respectable venue for all authors to publish their work in, and receive world-wide exposure to their research. I was very happy to see the number of scientists from different countries contacting me about my work, and sharing their perspectives on the risk management subject.

InTech: Are you satisfied with the editor?s work, the management of the publishing process and the InTech?s publishing team?

I had a wonderful experience working with the InTech Team. The attention to detail and professionalism has made the process quite simple and enjoyable. Overall, I am very delighted by the process of publishing with InTech, and have already submitted another chapter for review.

InTech: Tell us something about your future plans.

In 10 years from now, I would like to lead a market research / consulting company. Even with increased technology, informative data analysis is a necessity to making the optimal decisions for any business. With declining budgets, making the right decision has become even more important, consequently having a highly qualified team, working to help clients finding the right solutions for their business needs, will help to save money, and increase profitability of the company.

MI5 chief talks threats before Olympics

(AP) ? Britain has seen a credible terrorist attack plot about once a year since the Sept.11 attacks ? a worrying pattern as security officials brace for an array of threats ahead of next month's summer Olympics, the head of the country's domestic spy agency says.

Although Britain's threat level is a notch below what it has been for much of the past decade, it is still at substantial. The level means an attack is a strong possibility,

"Our assessment is that Britain has experienced a credible terrorist attack plot about once a year since 9/11," MI5's Director General Jonathan Evans said in prepared remarks ahead of a rare public speech Monday to the Lord Mayor's annual defense and security lecture in London.

"The (Olympic) games present an attractive target for our enemies and they will be at the center of the world's attention in a month or so," he said. "But the games are not an easy target, and the fact that we have disrupted multiple terrorist plots here and abroad in recent years demonstrates that the UK as a whole is not an easy target for terrorism."

Not so long ago, 75 percent of the terror threats prioritized by MI5 had links to Afghanistan or Pakistan. But Britain's efforts, along with those of its international partners, has brought that percentage down to below 50 percent, Evans said.

"You could say that we are near to reaching a form of stalemate," said Evans. "They haven't stopped trying but we have got better at stopping them."

But the terrorist threat is also widening to include al-Qaida affiliates in Mali, Yemen, Somalia and parts of the Middle East, he noted.

Although the Arab Spring revolutions have brought about radical political changes in some countries, they have also brought fresh opportunities for al-Qaida affiliates to seek refuge.

"Some are heading home to the Arab world again," Evans said. "And a small number of British would-be jihadis are also making their way to Arab countries to seek training and opportunities for militant activity, as they do in Somalia and Yemen. Some will return to the UK and pose a threat here. This is a new and worrying development."

MI5 has grown since the 2001 terror attacks in the United States, going from 1,800 to 3,800 staff ? some of whom joined after Britain's own homegrown suicide bombings that killed 52 people in 2005.

Since then, several international terror plots have been hatched in the United Kingdom, including the 2006 trans-Atlantic airliner plot to down several planes using liquid explosives. A handful of terror trials are also underway.

Evans stressed that other countries, such as Iran, shouldn't be underestimated in the evolving terror threat landscape.

"We have seen in recent months a series of attempted terrorist plots against Israeli interests in India, Azerbaijan and elsewhere," he said. "So a return to state-sponsored terrorism by Iran or its associates, such as Hezbollah, cannot be ruled out as pressure on the Iranian leadership increases."

And the threat of cyber security has recently become more prominent, he said.

In one recent case, a major London-listed company incurred revenue losses of 800 million pounds ($1.2 billion) because of a cyber attack, Evans said. He did not elaborate on the company's name or what country was behind the attack.

"What is at stake is not just our government secrets but also the safety and security of our infrastructure, the intellectual property that underpins our future prosperity and the commercially sensitive information that is the lifeblood of our companies and corporations," he said.

Evans has been in charge of MI5 since 2007.

This type of business is great unless you need to handle yearly records, bylaws, share distribution, and other issues associated with an organization. Simply put, a limited liability company may be ideal if you are the only proprietor of the business.

Developing this kind of venture offers several benefits. Members are able to manage limited liability and have pass-through income taxes a lot like a relationship. You don?t have to concern yourself with dual taxation and extreme paperwork, which are procedures you are unable to stay clear of when developing a company. You may also guard personal assets from organization debts, which companies and relationship are lacking.
You may also have the convenience and adaptability to generate your own personal company structure. Supervisors or associates can easily control the business. You don?t need to get a board of directors to manage each choice and affairs the supervision needs to make. This form of enterprise also includes less limitations with regards to selecting supervisors, unlike S-corporations.

How do you file LLC?

Filing an incorporation record can be pricey and annoying. Carrying this out job by yourself may expose you to red tape along with other kinds of bureaucracy. Because of this, company owners wishing to make the process easier seek out the expertise of organizations on the web to assist them with their Delaware corporation method.

Before getting the services from these online firms, consider the following aspects in their business:
- Make sure they help their clients with the process ? This includes letting them know if the name they plan to use is still available. They should also inform you exactly about the requirements to make the process of incorporation go smoothly. It also comes in the form of informing you about the amount you have to pay their services. This allows you to have a clear idea on how much to spend.
- Find out if they are updated with the recent published legal requirements for incorporation ? Laws and requirements change all the time so it is important the firm is updated about legal requirements. This ensures they are assisting their clients correctly and conveniently.

These are only a few of the numerous elements you have to take into consideration to distinguish great incorporation service providers on the web among others. Before you start to think of registering your Delaware corporation, become acquainted with those things.

The Writer is intending to have online Delaware corporation professional services to form a Delaware LLC.

Hey, I've submitted Cindy but you don't have to treat her special just because she happens to be a princess. she won't take any of that. For some cases how about Hansel and Gretel's witch case (why the parents are selling their kids to the witch and what does the witch does to these children- maybe something like a slavery- sweat shop kind of thing where she forces them to make sweets for her), Rapunzel and why she's lost (maybe the witch was in fact Rapunzel's father had once had a secret relationship with the witch and is kidnapping Rapunzel for revenge), Goldilocks breaking in houses (Goldilocks is in fact breaking in houses and is a big robber on the loose), Big Bad Wolf and his antics (destroying houses in 3 little pigs and pretending to be someone in Red Riding Hood). Etc. Just some ideas :)

Maureen Ryan: 'Mad Men' Recap: Lane's Tragedy

mm_rj_505_0930_1045

Don't read on unless you've seen "Commissions and Fees," Sunday's episode of "Mad Men."

"What is happiness? It's a moment before you need more happiness." - Don in the Dow Chemical meeting

It's somehow appropriate that this episode was full of references to accounts, ledgers, commissions, fees and expenses.

That's because, at the heart of the episode, there was a terrible miscalculation.

Don's fundamentally crippled when it comes to emotions -- he has them, but he often doesn't know how to deal with them or even what they are. He usually self-medicates them away with alcohol or tries to bury them with work or women. He may be slightly more attuned to what's going on inside his heart these days, but that's not saying much, considering the incredibly stunted place he started from.

The strangest dichotomy about him is that he both can and can't understand the pain and longings of other people. He can -- or he could, back in the day -- channel concepts like desire and nostalgia in clever or sentimental ways. So he gets People. But when it comes to the flesh-and-blood individuals around him, he often has absolutely no idea what's going on with them. His inability to truly put himself in the shoes of others lost him Peggy, it lost him Betty, it lost him lots of friendships and paramours and promising relationships.

Because he's Don Draper, he assumes that everyone else is like him. It's not a flaw unique to him -- we all find it hard to navigate our way out of our narcissism, I'm betting -- but his emotional cluelessness is especially pronounced. So he doesn't understand that Lane Pryce is not Don Draper. Lane is not a man who can reinvent himself at the drop of a hat, certainly not at his age. He's the product of a certain era and class, and he spent whatever bravery he had on getting far away from his father and reinventing himself -- just the one time -- as a spiffy New York ad man.

But Lane, like most people, doesn't have an infinite capacity for hobo-ing, for starting over, for shedding an old life and acquiring a new one, as you might acquire a car, for example. When Don told him to "think of an elegant exit," Don meant Lane should find a classy way to leave the firm. It never occurred to Don -- as it did to Lane -- that this was it. There were no more reinventions, no more courage, no more restarts left.

And so it led to one of the saddest scenes -- if not the saddest scene -- in "Mad Men" history: Three partners cutting Lane's body down after his suicide. There wasn't a Roger quip, there wasn't anything to make that moment anything but immensely painful, which is only fitting. Lane's death was tragic; it was treated as tragic, and rightfully so.

I think it was wise of the writers, Maria and Andre Jacquemetton, to slowly prepare us for Lane's death, via Joan's encounter with the blocked door and the others looking over the transom. We needed to be eased into what we knew was coming. Still, back at the start of the hour, when Don and Lane had their showdown in Don's office, I knew it was over then. Chekhov's check exploded, as I predicted it would in recent weeks, and though Lane's angry outburst was full of sensible rationales and justifications, even he knew it was over and that there was no way out. In that scene in Don's office, Jared Harris did a beautiful job of taking us through Lane's rapidly evolving emotional states, from defensive to furious to desperate and, finally, to resigned. Whatever reservations I have on how the story got Lane to this place (and I have a few), I have none about Harris' exceptional work.

When Lane looked up at Don standing over him, it was as if Don himself had risen from the dead. He loomed over Lane like a vengeful god. And weirdly enough, Lane's malfeasance was the cause of Don's career resurgence. Don't ask me to explain exactly how Don's self-hatred fuels his creativity -- it's 4 a.m. as I write this and the birds are singing -- but clearly the incident with Lane led to Don's drop-the-mic schooling of the Dow executives ("I don't want to hear about that letter anymore!").

A big part of Don's resurgence, of course, was the fact that Lane's embezzlement was such a piddly amount, in the grand scheme of things. "My God," I can picture Don thinking, "if he was going to take a risk that could lead to him losing everything, why not do it for something big? If you're going to take a chance or if you're going to do anything that requires a sacrifice or endurance, you might as well go for it." Don decided that the small ball SCDP was playing just wasn't enough. After a season of relative indolence, he finally decided (to the relief of many "Mad Men" fans, I'm sure) to go big or go home.

How will Lane's death weigh on him in the future? Will he just pack it away with the rest of his pain and self-hatred? He has to feel at least partly responsible for the man's death, and perhaps that will become another toxic secret he carries around. Maybe it'll be a way to fuel the next great pitch or campaign. Knowing Don, he'll be able to recycle this tragedy into some kind of big win that leaves him feeling hollow and filled with self-doubt.

Still, it was hard not to feel like the Don of "Commissions and Fees" was the old Don, a fact even Roger commented on. Much of the office-based storyline felt like an old school episode of the show, in that it was driven by big questions and mysteries: What would Don do? What would Lane do? Would he give up on the idea of suicide after his botched attempt with the Jaguar? (By the way, I may be going to hell for this, but I laughed when the notoriously unreliable car wouldn't start.) How would the other characters react to what Lane did? What was in his note?

Even though I was fairly sure after the scene in Don's office that Lane would die, there was still a great deal of tension in that story line -- welcome tension, given the slackness of several recent episodes -- and that foreknowledge didn't rob the moment of its impact.

But we had to know that something was up early on, didn't we? When he went into his office after his dressing down from Don, Lane got the indelible Don Draper-style back-of-the-head shot; a moment him sitting at his desk, with his back to the viewer, and his beloved New York spread before him. Did Lane ever get his moment of happiness, before a desire for more happiness set in? I hope so. This heartbreaking Englishman deserved it.

Was this a great hour of "Mad Men"? I don't know about that, but Lane's story connected with me on an emotional level like almost nothing else I've seen this season. There's been a lot of commentary lately -- much of it quite thought-provoking, from James Poniewozik and Linda Holmes in particular -- about whether Joan or any of the other characters would really do the things they did this season, or whether the show was forcing them down particular (and somewhat contrived) paths. I thought the latter was the case even before the Joan-Jaguar incident -- that instead of being driven by the characters' organic evolution, the show has been, in a number of cases, forcing the characters down somewhat contrived paths, all of them leading to the same dour, cramped, heavily symbolic place. Without getting deeply into specifics about particular characters (except to say that I never truly bought that Lane would embezzle funds), as I wrote last week, the show is just less compelling when you feel like you know the destination of every person's journey, and that destination is Disappointmentville.

Still, though I felt I knew where Lane was going as soon as he forged that check, his story line in this episode felt right, it felt like an organic place to go with the guy, as sad as it was. The Lane who felt this was the only way out is the Lane I've been watching for a few years; though the embezzlement struck me as out of character, if you accept that he took the money, the suicide did seem like something he would do. Oh, Lane, I'll miss you and your tweed blazers, sir.

Wrapping up, the non-Lane parts of the episode felt a bit like filler. Every season, there's the annual attempt to make Betty seem like a human being, and we got another one in this hour, but as I've said, she bores me, so I didn't care much either way about that story. As for the Sally-Glen stuff, it was pretty weak, given that Marten Weiner, who plays Glen, just isn't a very good actor (he's certainly not in Kiernan Shipka's league). So, in the interest of getting to be before 5 a.m., I'll just say that I wasn't all that compelled by the Glen-Sally-Betty material.

At least the presence of Don allowed for a non-bleak ending to the episode: Glen got to drive Don's car. The Don who is filled with existential despair -- and a deep desire to kick ass in the business world -- might be back, but at least this version of this guy can reach out to another human being in an altruistic moment, and share the ride.

That's something, isn't it?

A few final notes:

  • Oh Lane. Your taped-up glasses embody all the sadness in the world.
  • Is Don really and truly back? Well, he made us all almost fall in love with Napalm, so I'm going with yes.
  • Alan Sepinwall's review reminded me of Don's very similar reaction to another suicide by hanging -- that of Don's half-brother Adam, whom Don had also kicked to the curb.
  • I went back and forth on whether Don -- the keeper of an epic number of secrets -- was right to fire Lane for the one secret he kept. But as my husband pointed out, at the time Don's identity deception was discovered, it had no material affect on the firm's bottom line. Of course, it hampered their ability to get defense work in recent years, but that was well after the cat was out of the bag, and, when they were discovered, Bert Cooper was OK with Don's lies because they didn't take money out of the firm's pocket. All things considered, stealing from one's company and lying about it are absolutely fireable offenses, so I understand what Don did what he did. But as someone who's married to an Englishman who was here on a work visa for a long time, I can relate to Lane's horror at losing his visa. That kind of thing is truly a nightmare for foreign workers.
  • Where do you come down? Was Don right to fire Lane or should he have given him another chance? Lord knows Don has gotten more than his fair share of second chances. Let me know if you think Don was right in the comment area.
