Different Roof and Siding Materials That Fit Your Home

Houses are like pearls -- they are valuable and are great investments. And just like pearls, they are encased in protective shells that guard them from harmful elements. The roof and exterior walls are important because they are the shells that help create a structurally sound building that offers safety to its occupants.

Roofs and exterior wall treatments like sidings are crucial to a house's protection; without them the house is subject to extensive damage and early wear and tear. They provide protection to every structure built as shelter. Because various roofs and sidings have proven their worth, a number of materials have been developed to maximize their protective capabilities against harsh weather conditions. These materials are made to fit and adjust to the climate and topography of the area where they are used.

Preferred roofing systems are shingles made from asphalt, metal, slate, concrete, and clay tiles. Asphalt is most common because it is fire resistant and lasts longer. Metal shingles are relatively lightweight and have a great resistance to adverse weather.

Slate shingles are popular for their colorations and grades; they are considered virtually indestructible and are more expensive than other roofing materials. Concrete and clay tiles are quite heavy and need considerations for structural support. Wood or shake shingles have limited use because of their lower capacity to resist fire; though it can treated for better protection against fire.

Several Arlington roofing contractors in Virginia also offer wall sidings for home improvements. Sidings are wall treatments that protect and improve the appearance of your house. They are available in different materials such as vinyl, wood, aluminum and fiber cement. Vinyl sidings are the more popular siding materials because of their affordability, resistance to damage and low maintenance qualities.

Other Arlington siding contractors have sidings made from wood which come in different styles, textures and finishes but prone to insects, rotting, and warping. Aluminum comes in a broad range of styles, is moderately priced but is easily dented. Sidings can also be made from fiber cement which is extremely durable and easy to take care of.

The best material for roofing or siding Arlington residents prefer will provide utmost protection to make their home last longer. If extra effort is given for proper care and maintenance of these roofs and sidings, they will keep families safe for many years. For more information about roofing and sidings you may go to homerepair.about.com and ehow.com.

Researchers use virus's rogue traits to create electricity from motion

berkeley-labs-piezoelectrics-from-virus

Viruses are the swarming bullies of biology, but it turns out their alarming self-replication could one day power your iPod. We've seen them in batteries before, but researchers at Berkeley Labs have now coated electrodes with modified M13 bacteriophage, a harmless bacteria-eating virus, to create the first ever organic piezoelectric material -- which can convert force to electricity. The team explained that such a substance would be non-toxic, organize naturally into thin layers and self-regenerate, giving it a possible advantage over chemical options. In theory, by attaching a thin film of it to your shoes, power could be generated when walking, lending volts to the myriad electronics we pack around nowadays. To see a finger-powered video demo of our frequent-enemies making themselves useful for a change, stroll on past the break.

Low-level cadmium exposure can increase female cancer risk ...

Hossain, MB, M Vahter, G Concha and K Broberg, 2012. Low-level environmental cadmium exposure is associated with DNA hypomethylation in Argentinean women. Environmental Health Perspectives.

Women exposed to low levels of cadmium in their food have changes in DNA markers that alter gene regulation and increase their cancer risk. This study for the first time suggests that cadmium may be turning genes on or off in a way that triggers disease.

A recent study suggests a new understanding of the way long-term cadmium exposure from a women's diet can increase her risk for cancer.

Cadmium levels in the blood of women from Argentina were linked to changes in how the DNA in cells is tagged or marked by a methyl group, a process that can alter the way the genes are read and expressed. The decreased number of DNA markers associated with cadmium exposures in the women resemble genes commonly found in cancer cells and not normal cells.

While cadmium is long associated with higher cancer risk and some illnesses, how it exerts its effects is still not clear. Lab studies indicate cadmium can alter DNA tags, or DNA methylation. This study is important because it is the first to report this type of epigenetic effect of cadmium exposure in people. It offers a possible mechanism for the metal's link to cancer.

DNA methylation occurs when a chemical group called a methyl group is added onto DNA. This mark does not change the actual sequence of the DNA, but rather is a kind of go/stop signal that affects whether a particular gene is expressed or not. Changes in DNA tags can lead to cancer and other diseases. The methylation changes can be inherited if they are incorporated into the egg, sperm or other germ cells that give rise to them.

Cadmium is a heavy metal used in batteries, pigments and metal plating and is a by-product of ore smelting. Once in the environment, it does not disappear. People are exposed through diet, air pollution and smoking. Plants - including some of the crops we eat - absorb cadmium from fertilizers and contaminated soil. Major dietary sources are whole grains, potatoes, vegetables and shellfish. Burning of fossil fuels releases cadmium and increases levels in air pollution.

Cadmium is toxic and can act like an estrogen, increasing the risk for hormone related cancers such as breast cancer. Women whose diets contained higher levels of cadmium have a greater risk of developing breast cancer. Cadmium exposure is also associated with kidney disease, bone softening and impairment of early life development.

The researchers followed a group of 202 Argentinian women who live in the Andean plateau, a region that has minimal industrial pollution and low vehicle traffic. Cadmium exposure is primarily from diet. The Swedish researchers measured cadmium in the women's blood, which represents ongoing cadmium exposure, and in their urine, which represents life-long exposure. They calculated the levels of genes responsible for attaching the methyl groups to the DNA and counted the number of DNA tags in specific locations along the DNA of blood cells.

The author's compared the amount of cadmium in the blood and the urine to the amount of methylation on the DNA and the gene expression levels. They adjusted for factors that might interfere with the results, such as age and coco chewing.

The women had lower cadmium levels (0.23 micrograms per liter (?g/L)) than women in the U.S. population (0.4 ?g/L). The more cadmium found in the urine, the lower the amount of methylation on the DNA segments examined. The association was stronger in a subset of the women with a certain genetic mutation in a gene that maintains DNA methylation. Another gene responsible for placing the methyl markers was expressed at a lower level in women with high cadmium levels.

Together, these results suggest that life-long exposure to cadmium affects the process of DNA methylation.

Cadmium levels within the blood were not strongly correlated to any of these changes suggesting that long-term, low-level exposure is potentially more detrimental than the current levels in the blood.

One drawback of this study is that it is based on a relatively small population of women who were not exposed to cadmium through pollution. These findings will need to be repeated in larger, more diverse populations. Future studies are necessary to confirm these findings in other tissues and if these changes in DNA structure plays a role in other cadmium-related diseases.

Finance: Personal Loans - Share Bookmark

When a person faces a financial struggle, such as having a medical emergency bill come up, then they struggle to find some way in which they can pay this. One of the best options that are out there is getting a personal loan through a lending institution. There are other options, such as credit cards or a payday loan that the person can use. However, they will find that a personal loan in most cases will result in lower payments and a longer period in which they can pay on this. For the most part personal loans come in increments of $500 up to $5000. The person will want to get the amount that they need and nothing more since they are going to have to pay on this for quite some time in order to pay this off.

In order to get a personal loan the person must have the credit score to do this, or in many cases, the lender will require that the person put up some collateral. Collateral could be their car or some other major asset such as a boat. This is going to allow the lender to know that they will get their money in the long run if you fail to pay some payments.

With that being said, whenever you come across the need for money, you will find that there are personal loans that you can utilize in order to get the money that you need. Since this is something that you have an option for you will find that there are various times in which this can come in handy. However, the better relationship with your lender, the more likely you will be able to get these personal loans when you need it. Thus, always keep this in mind when dealing with other types of loans that you get from your lender.

PSA: Dropbox Dropquest begins right now!

Big Dropbox fan are you? Got plans for the weekend? Cancel 'em. Dropquest 2012 begins right now. If you're unfamiliar -- it's the storage company's internet scavenger hunt that involves a series of puzzles, challenges and, erm, origami. If you complete the game, you'll get 1GB of extra space for free, but if you come in first place, you'll get 100GB free for your entire life, while 10 second-placers get 20GB for life and so on. You're not allowed to ask for help on the company's support forum (you'll get disqualified) and you're competing against at least half a million other fans of the service, but if that hasn't daunted you then head on down to the source link and get puzzling!

ATD: Yahoo's CEO Scott Thompson to step down amidst degree scandal

scott thompson yahoo ceoWhile thousands upon thousands of Americans are celebrating graduation weekend with degree in hand, it looks as if the CEO of one particular internet company will be wondering why he lied about his. After weeks of investigating, word on the street has it that freshly appointed (as in January 4th) CEO Scott Thompson will be "stepping down." In other words, he's being canned. The news comes from an All Things D report on the matter, with the official word expected soon. The scandal took hold a few weeks back, with the official Yahoo bio listing a computer science degree that he allegedly didn't even have. The company line is that he's bolting for "personal reasons," but seriously -- what are the chances these "reasons" would've emerged sans scandal? It's bruited that Yahoo's global media head Ross Levinsohn will be filling Scott's shoes for now, but there's no word yet on who the firm's next CEO will be. It's a shame, but it sure feels like a revolving door in Yahoo's corner office.

Penultimate (for iPad)

Apple's iPad gives you numerous ways to take notes, from typing on the virtual keyboard to writing on the touchscreen with a stylus or your finger. The note-taking app Penultimate (99 cents), recently purchased by the note-syncing and storage app company Evernote, is one of the best iPad note-taking apps around. It's fast, friendly, flexible, and at less than a buck, a bargain, all reasons it's an Editors' Choice. Using the app is second nature because it's nearly the same as doodling in a paper notebook. While the app's touch-based sophistication will no doubt impress consumers, when paired with a touch stylus like the Kensington Virtuoso ($24.99), Penultimate can scale to the professional demands of engineers, architects, and industrial designers. Not to mention that the app is optimized for the new iPad's high-resolution retina display.

The Penultimate iPad app doesn't have a keyboard, so it's not useful for typing notes. And it isn't quite as feature-rich as our other Editors' Choice Note Taker HD ($4.99, 4.5 stars)?although the latter costs five times as much. (For more recommendations, see "Note-Taking Apps for the iPad.")

Broad Strokes
Penultimate's interface looks familiar, though if there's any uncertainty, an interactive walkthrough takes just a couple of minutes to complete. You write in a virtual notebook, filled with blank, grid, or lined pages. The tools, a pen?fine, medium, or broad tipped, in ten shades?and eraser follow your finger or stylus across the page. New pages appear when you flip forward by touching the top corner of a page. Flipping between pages is nearly as smooth as thumbing the pages of a physical book, a testament to the app's speed.

Also worth mentioning are two controls through which you can improve usage. From the settings, you can move the toolbar?buttons for clearing a page, writing, and erasing?from the bottom of a page to the top. There's also a clever feature called Wrist Protection, which, automatically disregards stray marks from a resting wrist. Sometimes, especially when doodling, Wrist Protection can be overly protective, ignoring quick swipes, but when it comes to writing, it's a must.

Finger Painting
Penultimate organizes your work in terms of "Notebooks." Accessing different notebooks is as easy as returning to "My Notebooks" and swiping through the covers. Inside a notebook, you can create as many pages as you like. Unlike a notebook that comes in one style?blank, lined, or grid?with Penultimate, you can alternate between the three paper background styles. An in-app connection to The Paper Shop allows you to buy additional paper styles, such as sheet music paper, should you choose. A few are free, but most cost about a dollar.

If you make mistakes, as you will at first while getting used to writing with your finger or a new stylus, you can use either an eraser or an "undo" button. Multiple undos are supported, thankfully, and a redo button lets you toggle back if you undo too many actions.

The Penultimate iPad app doesn't have handwriting-to-text OCR, as the app Notes Plus ($7.99) does. So if you write by hand, the text stays in your handwriting, for better or worse. The iPad display doesn't tent to make handwriting look any worse than it already is, and if anything, smooths it slightly. Penultimate is fine for quick notes, and amazing for sketching or mind-mapping, but we wouldn't recommend it for heavy writing.

Art Gallery
Whether you're sharing in real time through a projector, distributing sketches as PDFs, or backing up files in iTunes, Penultimate is a capable companion. If you're looking to collaborate with colleagues, you can connect your pad to a projector via the Apple iPad VGA Adapter ($29). You can also share sketches via email. From inside a notebook, you can select either page or a full notebook to be attached as either a standard PDF or the proprietary .pen format.

Exported PDFs look great. There's even an option to include the paper background image, or convert it to flat white. You can import image files into your notebooks and mark them up with notes or just place them on a page and resize them however you want. Penultimate integrates well with Dropbox, Evernote (Penultimate is now owned by the company Evernote), and iTunes.

Your Last Pen
Penultimate for iPad, a PCMag Editors' Choice, is an excellent and ridiculously inexpensive note-taking app that is especially handy for those who have to sketch diagrams and images in their notes. Typists will lament the lack of a keyboard and should stick to Note Taker HD, our other Editors' Choice, instead. Tight integration with Dropbox and Evernote, two big players in the cloud syncing space, given Penultimate a little more utility than it would otherwise have on its own. Now that the product has been picked up by Evernote, we're excited to see what's in store next for this capable and already impressive app.

Report: Apple dumping Google for own Maps app in iOS 6

Granted, Apple and Google aren't quite the bosom buddies they once were, but how far is Cupertino going to free itself from the Android-maker? Well, Apple's picked up a number of mapmakers and is now reportedly getting ready to unveil a Google map competitor for iOS. 9to5Mac is reporting that the mapping solution will be in-place for the next major version of the mobile operating system, combining technologies gathered with the acquisition of Placebase, C3 Technologies and Poly9. The star of the show is said to be the 3D mode with graphics nabbed from C3. All Things D has "independently confirmed" the forthcoming app reinvention, with sources adding, (hopefully a bit hyperbolically) that it will "blow your head off." According to rumors, we'll be finding out a lot more come WWDC next month.

Europe votes to cap data roaming prices, will make it cheaper to tweet from Ibiza

European Union flags

European Union countries already had a data roaming cutoff law in place to prevent bill shock after your next Balearic vacation, but the price of the data in question should get much cheaper very soon. The European Parliament has just voted 578 to 10 to cap the price customers pay at no more than 70 Euro cents (91 US cents) per megabyte starting from July 1st, with that price eventually dipping to 45 Euro cents (58c US) a year later and just 20 Euro cents (26 US cents) in 2014. Voice and text price caps are going down to as little as 19 and nine Euro cents (25 and 12 cents US) in that two-year span, and if you're visiting from outside the EU, you'll be glad to hear that the anti-bill shock rule will apply to you this year as well. So, while you still might want to avoid uploading large videos from your phone while in Spain, you'll at least have the option of checking in on Foursquare without having to take out a small mortgage.

Meg Whitman: HP's engineering is very much still alive, aims to be cloud computing leader

HP sure knows how to wrap up a party -- by letting its CEO make a surprise appearance right at the end of the show. Joining Todd Bradley on the stage, Meg Whitman reassured the audience with her company's "commitment to fantastic products," and that "engineering is very much still alive from HP." In regards to the recent merger of HP's Imaging and Printing Group with Personal Systems Group (which changed this week's show entirely), Meg -- who's a big believer in focusing tasks -- is confident that Todd's new team will deliver a united brand and a unified design language, thus making the PC business stronger with the best customer experience and customer support.

Additionally, Meg seems to be getting along just fine with the board, saying that they are deeply engaged to plot a brighter future for HP. Under Meg's supervision, HP is doubling down on R&D and incubation, as well as aiming to be a leader in cloud computing (she claims that HP is already the largest provider of private cloud services) and security by bringing a full host of benefits that the competitors lack. When asked about HP's mobile and tablet strategy, Todd skirted around by emphasizing the happy partnership between HP and Microsoft on tablets, but he also said that markets evolve and change all the time, and that his company's well aware of the differences between the needs of enterprises or small businesses and the needs of consumers. So in order words, stay tuned.
