Green Homes May Actually Result in Higher ... - Boston Real Estate

Quite a few have questions whether or not green features in homes would result in higher value and selling prices. There are some studies that report that consumers are willing to pay more for green-rated Boston real estate and real estate across the US. Other studies have shown that green-certified properties typically sell at a larger price than comparable homes that are less efficient.

There was one recent study of note that took a sample of homes in California between 2007 and 2012 totally 1.6 million in number, which found that on average a green certified house resulted in a 9% increase to its value. They additionally found that in areas where real estate buyers had registered a greater number or hybrid cars the buyers were more willing to pay higher prices for green-certified real estate properties than buyers in areas with fewer registered hybrids.

This study did not see a notable connection between local utility rates and buyers? willingness to pay higher prices for ?green? homes, however, the study did show that in warmer areas buyers were willing to pay more for green-certified properties.

This study was orchestrated by Professor Matthew E. Kahn of UCLA and Nils Kok of Maastricht University (located in the Netherlands).

What do you think about these findings?

Are you willing to pay more for ?green? homes than you would be for a comparable Boston real estate property that isn?t as efficient?

If you?re interested in finding a ?green? Boston real estate property, contact First Boston Realty International to discuss your housing needs. First Boston Realty International is a well-connected Boston-based real estate firm ready and willing to assist you in finding the perfect ?green? home.

Clegg calls for 'wealth tax'

Rich Britons should face a temporary tax hike to help Britain out of its stubborn recession, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said in an interview published on Wednesday.

Clegg, who leads the Liberal Democrats -- the junior partner in a coalition with Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives -- told the Guardian newspaper the super-rich should do more to help Britain out of "economic war".

Britain fell back into recession at the end of 2011 after climbing out of a deep downturn in late 2009.

The coalition has introduced steep austerity cuts since it came to power in 2010 in a bid to shrink its massive deficit, while Britain continues to suffer the ongoing fallout from the crisis in the eurozone, a key trading partner.

"If we are going to ask people for more sacrifices over a longer period of time, a longer period of belt tightening as a country, then we just have to make sure that people see it is being done as fairly and as progressively as possible," Clegg said.

"If we want to remain cohesive and prosperous as a society, people of very considerable personal wealth have got to make a bit of an extra contribution."

Figures released last Friday showed that British gross domestic product (GDP) shrank 0.5 percent between April and June compared with the first quarter.

The centrist Liberal Democrats have previously campaigned for a "mansion tax" on properties worth more than ?2 million ($3.2 million, 2.5 million euros).

But Clegg's political foes point out that he backed Britain's last budget in March, which introduced tax reductions for top earners.

"He talks about a tax on the wealthiest, but he voted for the tax cut for millionaires in (finance minister) George Osborne's budget," said Chris Leslie, treasury spokesman for the opposition Labour party.

Clegg's proposal appears to indicate a fresh bid to differentiate the Lib Dems' economic policies from those of the Conservatives.

The two parties have fallen out in recent months on policies ranging from Europe to constitutional reform.

Senior Conservative lawmaker Bernard Jenkin attacked the plan, saying it could "strangle the goose that lays the golden egg".

"If you go on raising tax on rich people -- and that's why, in agreement with Nick Clegg we have had to cut the top rate of tax from 50p to 45p -- you drive wealth abroad," Jenkin told BBC radio.

Los Angeles Educational facilities Welcome Back The Arts

Los Angeles Schools are seeing a gradual improve in arts training as the dual result of a protracted-term program and recent state funding. The Arts for All program was initiated in 2002 as a 10-yr plan to restore arts schooling to the 80 districts of Los Angeles Schools. The challenge focuses on bringing music, dance, drama and the visible arts to Ok-12 faculties within the area. 9 colleges have just signed up for the 2007-2008 school yr, bringing the overall variety of Los Angeles Schools involved up to 27.

Two of the newest individuals are the Lancaster and Palmdale districts of Los Angeles Schools. Each schools completely eradicated their elementary music packages within the final decade on account of finances cuts and increased pressure to perform on state tests. Major cuts first began for Los Angeles Schools with Proposition thirteen in 1978. This California mandate decreased property taxes and district funds, which required all Los Angeles Colleges to scale back or eliminate arts and physical education classes.

Los Angeles Colleges have been happy when the state introduced funding of $500 million for art, music and bodily training classes at first of June. Los Angeles Colleges will use much of these funds for the Arts for All Program. Arts for All is constructed on a five-step process which, whereas proven efficient, costs money. The five steps concerned are:

1. Allocating 5% of a district?s price range to arts training 2. Having a board adopted coverage 3. Creating an implementation plan with a timeline 4. Assigning a district stage arts coordinator 5. Sustaining a student to arts trainer ratio of 400:1

Los Angeles Schools pays for a program expert to information dad and mom, staff and neighborhood members in the creation of their implementation plan. The Lancaster district has a further grant of $260,000 for its art and music programs.

Los Angeles Schools welcome the increased funding as a protracted overdue measure. Many educators in the Los Angeles Schools have lamented the loss of the arts as dangerous to pupil development. Whereas lots of the cuts to arts education end result from diverting funds to cowl tutorial subjects wanted to cross state assessments, lecturers argue that artwork really enhances learning, permits youngsters to make connections between subjects, and gives an a lot needed steadiness to education.

Like the remainder of the country?s urban districts Los Angeles Colleges are trying to satisfy the 2014 No Youngster Left Behind requirement that mandates proficiency on state tests by all students regardless of developmental delays or language barriers. Diverting funding away from the humanities has put Los Angeles Faculties in a scenario where kids as young as third grade are shedding recess, bodily exercise and a basic arts background in a frenzied scramble to fulfill rising national standards.

Armstrong called humble hero who served country

When Neil Armstrong walked on the moon all those years ago, he made his country believe that anything was possible with ingenuity and dedication ? and in the process became of America's greatest heroes, his friends, colleagues and admirers said Saturday after news that the former astronaut had died.

"When I think of Neil, I think of someone who for our country was dedicated enough to dare greatly," said former astronaut John Glenn, who went through jungle training in Panama with Armstrong as part of the astronaut program and was a close friend. He said Armstrong showed exemplary skill and dedication.

The idea of Armstrong as a humble pilot who served his country above all echoed around the country Saturday, by visitors to museums that fete his accomplishments and by his former NASA colleagues. Armstrong died Saturday at age 82 from complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures, his family said.

In California, visitors and staff at the Griffith Observatory paused for a moment of silence. At the Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Armstrong's hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio, a black ribbon hung over a plaque of Armstrong in the museum's entryway and a U.S. flag was lowered in Armstrong's memory.

Tourist Jonathon Lack, a judge from Anchorage, Alaska, said he decided to visit the Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., after hearing of Armstrong's death.

"What really hit me is that he was in his 30s when he walked on the moon," said Lack, who is 42. "That made me think about how little I've done."

He saw in Armstrong's death a reminder of an America where people dreamed big things and sought to accomplish the inconceivable.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th-century's scientific expeditions during the climax of a heated space race with the Soviet Union.

Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the lunar surface, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs. Aldrin, who became the public face of the moon landing after shy Armstrong recoiled from the public eye, said his colleague's leap changed the world forever and became a landmark moment in human history.

"Whenever I look at the moon, it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from Earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone," he said. "Virtually the entire world took that memorable journey with us. I know I am joined by millions of others in mourning the passing of a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew."

The third astronaut on the mission, Michael Collins, circled the moon in the mother ship 60 miles overhead while the other two went to the surface. "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly," Collins said, according to NASA's website.

The Apollo 11 command module Columbia is on display at the Air and Space Museum, and visitors there Saturday gathered around it to remember Armstrong and his accomplishments.

Bob Behnken, the chief of the NASA Astronaut Office, said Armstrong's historic step was the reason many became astronauts.

"Neil Armstrong was a very personal inspiration to all of us within the astronaut office," he said. "The only thing that outshone his accomplishments was his humility about those accomplishments. "

Daniel Zhou, a student at Armstrong's alma mater Purdue University in Indiana and a member of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, said Saturday was sad day.

"He will always be a source of inspiration for our generation, and for the generations to come, as we ask ourselves, 'Why explore space?'" Zhou said.

At New York's Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, a 1960 photo of Armstrong hangs near the space shuttle Enterprise ? showing a youthful NASA pilot standing and smiling next to the X-15 rocket plane he was testing.

On Saturday afternoon, many among the hundreds of visitors filing past the mammoth white display didn't know he had died.

'I'm shocked!" said Dennis McKowan, 49, a computer network engineer from Sunnyvale, Calif., on a business trip to New York. "I used to skip school to watch the Apollo launches."

He was a child when he watched the moon landing.

"How do you top that? No one has gone farther yet."

Md. Woman Blames Husband For 40 Dead Pets ? CBS Baltimore

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) ? A Columbia woman on trial for animal cruelty contends her husband was responsible for the 40 dead animals found in her townhouse in January.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Elizabeth Lindenau?s trial began Thursday in Ellicott City.

She and her husband Brady Decker are both charged with 69 counts of animal cruelty. His arraignment was set for Friday.

Lindenau?s lawyer Jonathan Smith said in his opening statement that the couple had recently moved out of the townhouse. He said Decker was supposed to feed the animals they left behind.

Police say the dead animals included birds, cats, rabbits, a guinea pig and a snake.

Prosecutor Tiffany Avira said the case epitomizes animal cruelty. She says the animal deaths were no accident.

What Surge? Afghanistan?s Most Violent Places Stay Bad, Despite Extra Troops

U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Paul Grimm, foreground, a rifleman with Police Advisor Team 2, Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 6, patrols in Sangin District, Helmand. Photo: U.S. Marine Corps

When President Obama surged 30,000 additional U.S. troops into Afghanistan in 2010, the new forces were concentrated overwhelmingly on two volatile areas of southern Afghanistan: Helmand and Kandahar Provinces. Now, as the troop surge is practically over, those provinces still rank as the most violent in the entire country.

According to Marine Gen. John Allen, the commander of the war, ten districts around Afghanistan account for fully half of the insurgent violence in the country. (Afghanistan has 405 districts.) According to a breakdown provided to Danger Room by the Pentagon, six of those districts ? Sangin, Now Zad, Nad Ali, Kajaki, Musa Qalah, and Nahr-e Saraj ? are in Helmand Province, where the Marines started fighting a costly and grueling battle with the Taliban in 2009. Three more of them ? Maiwand, Panjwei and Zharay ? are in Kandahar, the Taliban?s birthplace and the scene of similarly arduous Army fighting from 2010 to the present. (The final district, Pul-e Alam, is in the eastern Logar Province.)

Spokespeople for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), NATO?s military command in Afghanistan, did not immediately respond to inquiries seeking elaboration. But there are around 80,000 U.S. troops remaining in Afghanistan, and the remaining 10,000 surge troops are due to leave the country by the end of September. The persistence of the violence in the provinces they bled and died to pacify raises questions about the durability of what the U.S. will leave behind in Afghanistan.

The Marine Corps, for reasons that remain obscure, decided in 2009 to focus its fight on sparsely-populated Helmand Province. They?ve fought hard and recently in Sangin and Kajaki; and in July 2011, ISAF boasted to Danger Room that?violence in Nad Ali was down 70 percent?from the previous year. With the surge forces receding,?the Marines now find themselves spread thin: Marines have only a single company for each of the districts of Now Zad and Musa Qaleh.

Rajiv Chandrasekaran, a?Washington Post?associate editor, focused much of his recent book about the war,?Little America,?on the Marine fight for Helmand. While he noted that several of the violent districts aren?t ones where the Marines donated the majority of their focus in the province ? some are the responsibility of British forces ? the overrepresentation of Helmand in Afghanistan?s most violent districts ?raises some fundamental questions about the Marine narrative that they fundamentally transformed Helmand province,? Chandrasekaran said, particularly Now Zad, Musa Qaleh and Sangin, places where the Marines have?claimed major progress. ?If six of the ten most violent districts in the country are still in Helmand, it does call into question the sustainability of some of their gains.?

Kandahar, on the other hand, is one of Afghanistan?s most populous regions ? not to mention the traditional home of the Taliban. And there ISAF has some good news to report: the?United Nations found that civilian casualties declined in 2012, although they remain triple the rate of civilian deaths in 2008. Kandahar City, the site of intense fighting in 2010 and 2011, is no longer one of the hottest of hot spots. Neither is the adjoining Argandab River Valley, where?U.S. troops flattened entire villages?that the Taliban boobytrapped.

But coalition forces fought hard in Kandahar?s Maiwand and Panjwei provinces ? where the fight grew so frustrating and American leadership became so weak that a band of rogue, sadistic soldiers formed a ?Kill Team? to take revenge. One Army veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who recently ended a year?s tour in Kandahar described it as the most arduous thing he has ever done in his life.

Nonetheless,?after two years of combat in Kandahar and Helmand, those provinces still account for an outsize proportion of Afghan insurgent violence.

Nor is violence is down significantly in Afghanistan as a whole. Allen, speaking to Pentagon reporters on Thursday, said the overall insurgent violence in the country has dipped three percent from this time last year ? a figure he conceded ?may not be statistically significant.? The previous year, ISAF said that insurgent attacks remained basically level with summer 2010 levels ? when the full complement of surge troops arrived in Afghanistan. The purpose of the surge was to reverse the momentum of the Taliban in order to hand over a stable Afghanistan to the Afghan government. If measured by the rate of insurgent activity, the surge at most dented the Taliban?s momentum.

Allen doesn?t see it that way. He contended to Pentagon reporters that U.S., Afghan and allied troops pushed the Taliban out of former redoubts and essentially forced them into small clusters. He cited the ten districts accounting for half of the violence in the country as a positive indicator.

It is doubtful that the post-surge U.S. presence in Afghanistan will take those ten violent districts head-on. By the fall, the Marine presence in Helmand will fall by 10,000, leaving 7,000 Marines in the province. After the summer, the likely focus of the Army-led task forces in Kandahar will be on consolidating security gains and mentoring Afghan troops to prepare to secure the future. That future, Allen told reporters, will not be an peaceful one: after NATO ends its combat mission in 2014, Afghan forces must continue to ?deal with violence.?

Fancy review - like Pinterest, only shoppier

Fancy was featured in Google Play for awhile, offering what looks like a Pinterest clone, but it does a few things differently. Like Pinterest, it showcases shiny products in a visually appealing format and allows users on the network to create categorized collections. Usually these kinds of sites revolve around home and fashion, and though there’s plenty of that on Fancy, you’re just as likely to find cool phone cases and miscellaneous gadgets.

What really sets Fancy apart is that they form partnerships with vendors so if you add something of theirs to your collection, you can often earn promotions usually in the form of coupon codes for discounts on online orders. As you might expect, Fancy has a lot more “buy now” links and the like.

Peter Orszag Questions Private Health Insurance Competition. So ...

About the the only satisfaction I get out of Rep. Paul Ryan?s horrible plan to voucherize Medicare is the truly ironic effect it has on the top supporters of the Affordable Care Act. For much of 2009-2010 they kept saying how vouchers to buy private health insurance on an exchange was a great idea for a 64 year old (or younger person ? i.e., anyone not eligible for Medicare? when trying to sell Obamacare. Now to attack Ryan?s plan the exact same people are correctly pointing out what a horrible idea it is to offer vouchers to buy private health insurance on an exchange for those 65 years or older.

From Peter Orszag in Bloomberg:

The vast bulk of health-care costs arise from an extremely small share of patients, whose insurance will inevitably bear a substantial share of their expenses.

That?s why competition in health care doesn?t work as well as in other sectors, and it?s also why the key to keeping costs to a minimum is to encourage providers to offer better, less costly care in complex cases.

Unfortunately, proponents of moving Medicare to a private ?consumer-driven? system, including Republican vice presidential hopeful?Paul Ryan, seem to instead believe in a health-care competition tooth fairy ? that if we just increase the patient?s share of costs and bolster competition among insurance companies, the expense will come down. As?Karl Rove?recently?argued, ?Competition will lower costs by using market forces to spur innovation and improvement.?

Calling this notion the tooth fairy is valid, but where was this Orszag back in 2010 when he was using the exact same ?health-care competition tooth fairy? nonsense to sell the ACA as Obama?s Director of the Office of Management and Budget?

This statement about how competition doesn?t work well in health insurance applies equally as well to the ACA exchanges as it does to Ryan?s proposed Medicare exchange. If Orszag believed competition among private insurance companies doesn?t work in health insurance, he should have said something when he was helping to design Obama entire health care plan centered around competition only by private insurance companies. Instead Orszag worked to undermine calls for a public option saying only private insurance competition was sufficient.

The one good thing about Ryan?s Medicare plan is it has gotten the so called ?policy wonks? behind Obamacare to admit the basic policy of expecting private insurance exchanges to result in competitive prices, which lies at the heart of the ACA, is stupid. I guess two years late is better than never.

Democrats attack Paul Ryan over Social Security privatization

In his 2010 'Road Map for America's Future,' the Wisconsin congressman proposed a plan to allow younger workers to divert more than one-third of their Social Security taxes into personal accounts that they would own and could will to their heirs.

By Stephen Ohlemacher,?Associated Press / August 20, 2012

Democrats are eagerly renewing their fight against privatizing Social Security now that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked Paul Ryan as his running mate. It was a fight that didn't go well for the GOP when President George W. Bush pushed the idea in 2005.

In his 2010 "Road Map for America's Future," the Wisconsin congressman proposed a plan to allow younger workers to divert more than one-third of their Social Security taxes into personal accounts that they would own and could will to their heirs.

Ryan wrote that the accounts would provide workers an opportunity "to build a significant nest egg for retirement that far exceeds what the current program can provide." Workers 55 and older would stay in the current system.

Romney hasn't embraced the proposal and Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, didn't include it in either of the federal budgets passed by House Republicans the past two years. But now that Ryan is running for vice president, Democrats hope to capitalize on the issue.

Bush's proposal for private accounts received a chilly reception from members in both parties in Congress, though Ryan embraced it. Democrats used the issue against GOP congressional candidates in the 2006 election, when they regained control of the House and Senate.

"The very last thing we ought to be doing is putting at risk the retirement security of millions of America's seniors," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, who heads the Democratic National Committee.

Until now, Social Security had been largely absent from the presidential campaign. President Barack Obama has yet to lay out a detailed plan for addressing the issue, and his silence is drawing criticism from advocates who supported him in the past. Romney has been more forthcoming with proposals, but Social Security has not been a big part of his campaign, either.

Romney, in his book, "No Apology," said he liked the idea of personal accounts. But, he wrote, "Given the volatility of investment values that we have just experienced, I would prefer that individual accounts were added to Social Security, not diverted from it, and that they were voluntary."

Romney's current plan for Social Security doesn't mention personal accounts. Instead, he proposes a gradual increase in the retirement age to account for growing life expectancy. For future generations, Romney would slow the growth of benefits "for those with higher incomes."

Romney says tax increases should be off the table, and current beneficiaries and those near retirement should be spared from cuts.

"Mitt Romney and Paul support gradual reforms to Social Security that protect current beneficiaries from any benefit disruptions while strengthening the program to ensure that it doesn't go bankrupt," Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams said.

The trustees who oversee Social Security say the trust funds that support the program will run dry in 2033. At that point, Social Security will generate only enough tax revenue to pay about 75 percent of benefits, triggering automatic cuts unless Congress acts.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama said he wanted to improve Social Security's finances by applying the payroll tax to annual wages above $250,000. It is now limited to wages below $110,100, a level that increases with inflation.

Obama also pledged to oppose raising the retirement age or reducing annual cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs. "Let me be clear, I will not do either," Obama said at the time.

Last year, however, Obama put on the table a proposal to reduce annual COLAs during deficit-reduction talks with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. The talks ultimately failed and nothing came of the proposal, but it raised questions about whether Obama would honor his 2008 pledge.

"A national politician would do well to strongly identify themselves with Social Security, not just with rhetoric, but to be very clear that they understand the pain people are experiencing today, that they stand behind this program and they will protect the citizenry and they will not cut benefits," said Eric Kingson, a Syracuse University professor who co-founded Social Security Works. "I hope to hear that from the White House. I have not heard that yet."

Obama offered some principles to strengthen Social Security in his 2011 State of the Union address.

"We must do it without putting at risk current retirees, the most vulnerable or people with disabilities, without slashing benefits for future generations and without subjecting Americans' guaranteed retirement income to the whims of the stock market," Obama said in the speech.

Last week, Vice President Joe Biden made a more sweeping guarantee during a campaign swing in southern Virginia, telling a customer at a diner that Social Security will not be changed.

"I guarantee you, flat guarantee you, there will be no changes in Social Security," Biden told the customer, according to a White House pool report. "I flat guarantee you."

A Biden adviser said later the vice president was merely reassuring the woman that her benefits would not be changed. The adviser spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the issue.

Obama campaign spokesman Adam Fetcher said the president "has put forward a set of principles to guide bipartisan action to strengthen it for future generations. Rather than laying the groundwork for a bipartisan approach as the president has done, Mitt Romney's only solution would mean deep benefit cuts for future retirees. His running mate, Paul Ryan was an architect of privatization."

Romney's campaign chided Obama's inaction.

"His failure to lead on entitlements has put the future of Social Security at risk," said Williams, the Romney spokesman. "Mitt Romney is committed to ensuring that Social Security is there for future generations and he has a comprehensive plan to save Social Security with commonsense reforms."

Business Travel ? Drive Your Own Luxury Car or Rent One | The ...

I have a excellent friend who has a very nice Maserati which he leases, as he uses it for business. Of direction, he also travels to nearby states each year to speak with his distributors, however he doesn?t capture his luxury automobile since he doesn?t desire to place all those miles on it, or subject it to some of the locations he will travel to. Therefore, he rents a automobile instead. Since he has so many stops all together, it doesn?t constitute sense to glide to each location, and he also needs to capture samples with him, and a variety of other things.

How swing state papers reacted to Ryan pick

Click image for more front pages. (Newseum.org)

Voters picking up their newspapers in swing states on Sunday got a small glimpse of what kind of coverage Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan can expect between now and Election Day.

In Ohio, "Romney's choice of Ryan seen as bold move with appeal to the right," the Cleveland Plain Dealer said.

"Ryan Shakes Up the Race," the Virginian-Pilot said on its front page.

"Ryan reshapes campaign," the Denver Post declared. "Ryan is idolized by young conservatives, and he brings specific--and controversial--fiscal formulas to the ticket."

Colorado's Durango Herald called Ryan a "strong conservative with economic vision."

[Slideshow: How newspapers in swing states reacted to Paul Ryan]

According to those in Ryan's hometown of Janesville, Wis., Romney is "getting an articulate and straightforward young man with Midwestern values," the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal said.

Romney's VP pick "could play well in Iowa," the Des Moines Sunday Register said.

But "Ryan could hurt Romney in Florida," the Miami Herald said. "Ryan's plans to retool Medicare pose challenges in Florida, as does his one-time opposition to the Cuban embargo, a stance anathema to many Cuban Americans."

In Tampa, where the Republican National Convention will convene later this month, the Tampa Bay Times earned the award for punniest Ryan headline: "Fiscal Attraction."

Seven dead in Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting

A worshiper prays outside a Sikh temple after the shooting. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/AP)

At least seven people were killed, including the suspected gunman, in a mass shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., south of Milwaukee on Sunday.

According to police, 911 dispatchers received multiple calls from the temple at approximately 10:25 a.m. local time. An officer who responded to the scene was treating a victim when he was "ambushed" by the suspected gunman in the parking lot, police said. The veteran officer was shot multiple times and is in surgery at Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital, according to Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards. His condition is not known.

The suspect was shot and killed by a second officer, police said. The gunman was not identified, and no motive was released.

Tactical units conducting a sweep of the 17,000-square-foot temple discovered four bodies inside and three?including the gunman?in the parking lot. Edwards said "weapons" were recovered, but would not elaborate. According to CNN, two guns were recovered.

There were initial, unconfirmed reports of multiple shooters and a hostage situation, though police said they believe there was just one gunman.

A spokesman for Froedtert Hospital said a total of three victims were admitted in critical condition?two with gunshot wounds to the face and one with gunshot wounds to the abdomen. Other area hospitals were initially told to prepare for as many as 20 victims.

Law enforcement officials are treating the case as an "act of domestic terrorism," police said, and the FBI is leading the investigation. The names of the victims in Sunday's shooting were not released.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Satwant Kaleka, the president of the temple, was one of the victims taken to Froedtert Hospital, according to his nephew, Gurmit Kaleka.

Dozens of worshipers, including women and children, were gathering for a meal before an 11:30 a.m. prayer service at the temple, or gurdwara, when the shooting occurred. There are about 500 members in the congregation, officials said.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as worshipers reportedly hid inside closets within the building after the gunman opened fire inside.

President Barack Obama was notified of the shooting shortly before 1 p.m. (ET) by chief counterterrorism adviser John Brennan, a senior administration official told Yahoo News.

"Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the shooting that tragically took so many lives in Wisconsin," Obama said. "At this difficult time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded. My administration will provide whatever support is necessary to the officials who are responding to this tragic shooting and moving forward with an investigation. As we mourn this loss which took place at a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has been enriched by Sikhs, who are a part of our broader American family."

Mitt Romney released a statement, too. "This was a senseless act of violence and a tragedy that should never befall any house of worship," Romney said. "Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Oak Creek Sikh community. We join Americans everywhere in mourning those who lost their lives and in prayer for healing in the difficult days ahead."

Wis. Gov. Scott Walker said his office is working with the FBI and local law enforcement in its investigation.

"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence," Walker said. "At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends."

The Indian Embassy in Washington called it a "tragic incident" and said it has been in touch with the National Security Council and local authorities to monitor the situation.

Sunday's shooting comes less than a month after the Aurora, Colo., theater massacre, when 12 people were killed and 58 wounded during a midnight screening of "Dark Knight Rises."

Sikhism is a 500-year-old monotheist faith with about 27 million followers worldwide, including about 300,000 in the United States.

Since 9/11, Sikh groups in the United States have reported a rise in bias attacks. There have been more than 700 reports of hate-related incidents against Sikhs since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, according to the Associated Press. "Sikhs don't practice the same religion as Muslims," the AP noted, "but their long beards and turbans often cause them to be mistaken for Muslims, advocates say."

In the wake of the shooting in Wisconsin, law enforcement officials in other cities, including New York City, increased patrols near Sikh temples on Sunday. However, there is no known threat against Sikh temples in New York, the NYPD said.

1) Existence associated with portfolio

Sure, that appears to be apparent that will web page design firm must have very own web page along with collection regarding past performs. Yet do not be surprised excessive when you see 1 with out that. There is several causes of this specific but My spouse and i might not propose one to induce fate. Profile is much like a ?face? and it?s really pleasure involving web page design business, that has to be total, substantial, as well as routinely current? plus it MUST BE!

two) Total number involving works

This can let you know much however there is no standard variety that may assure you are going to deal with web page design expert. Sure, 50 efficiently completed jobs is preferable to 5, nevertheless their own good quality is also critical. Assess the number along with period of time during which the business performs available in the market and also determine common amount of tasks annually, thirty day period, as well as week. Remember that regular web site style will take 2-4 months being finished.

Precisely what these records can provide an individual? To begin with, you can see the business offers ample know-how. Then this specific implies that they have stable flow regarding functions, fine-tuned plan associated with development method, as well as enough staff members to perform the idea, if you commit your current web page layout towards the business you could be sure that the work defintely won?t be for them like a bolt from your orange or perhaps well-paid although not doable overloading.

3) Form of works

Appear diligently with each and every perform in the portfolio. What number of assignments are similar to usually the one you?ll need by kind of site, technological innovation applied, sector, along with appearance and feel?

Researchers invent new tool to study single biological molecules

Saturday, August 4, 2012

By blending optical and atomic force microscope technologies, Iowa State University and Ames Laboratory researchers have found a way to complete 3-D measurements of single biological molecules with unprecedented accuracy and precision.

Existing technologies allow researchers to measure single molecules on the x and y axes of a 2-D plane. The new technology allows researchers to make height measurements (the z axis) down to the nanometer ? just a billionth of a meter ? without custom optics or special surfaces for the samples.

"This is a completely new type of measurement that can be used to determine the z position of molecules," said Sanjeevi Sivasankar, an Iowa State assistant professor of physics and astronomy and an associate of the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory.

Details of the technology were recently published by the journal Nano Letters. Co-authors of the study are Sivasankar; Hui Li, an Iowa State post-doctoral research associate in physics and astronomy and an associate of the Ames Laboratory; and Chi-Fu Yen, an Iowa State doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering and a student associate of the Ames Laboratory.

The project was supported by lab startup funds from Iowa State University and a $120,075 grant from the Grow Iowa Values Fund, a state economic development program.

Sivasankar's research program has two objectives: to learn how biological cells adhere to each other and to develop new tools to study those cells.

That's why the new microscope technology ? called standing wave axial nanometry (SWAN) ? was developed in Sivasankar's lab.

Here's how the technology works: Researchers attach a commercial atomic force microscope to a single molecule fluorescence microscope. The tip of the atomic force microscope is positioned over a focused laser beam, creating a standing wave pattern. A molecule that has been treated to emit light is placed within the standing wave. As the tip of the atomic force microscope moves up and down, the fluorescence emitted by the molecule fluctuates in a way that corresponds to its distance from the surface. That distance can be compared to a marker on the surface and measured.

"We can detect the height of the molecule with nanometer accuracy and precision," Sivasankar said.

The paper reports that measurements of a molecule's height are accurate to less than a nanometer. It also reports that measurements can be taken again and again to a precision of 3.7 nanometers.

Sivasankar's research team used fluorescent nanospheres and single strands of DNA to calibrate, test and prove their new instrument.

Users who could benefit from the technology include medical researchers who need high-resolution data from microscopes. Sivasankar thinks the technology has commercial potential and is confident it will advance his own work in single molecule biophysics.

"We hope to use this technology to move that research forward," he said. "And in doing that, we'll continue to invent new technologies."

See the sights of London for less

Kate Maxwell, a native Londoner and editor-in-chief of Jetsetter.com, shares her tips on how to visit London for less, including how to get around, where to stay, and what to do.

London is renowned for being one of the world?s most expensive cities, but there are many fantastic attractions that won?t cost you a penny. Kate Maxwell, editor-in-chief of Jetsetter.com, shared her favorites on the TODAY this morning.

Markets
Spending time at some of London?s markets ??some of which have been trading for over a hundred years ? is a great way to get up close and personal with the locals. Food markets around the capital have blossomed in recent years, selling local, seasonal and artisanal products. Look out for the free samples!

  • Borough Market,?in Southwark, on the South Bank of the Thames, is open every day during the Olympics. Don?t miss Mrs Kings Pork Pies, hand-made in the north of England from a 159-year-old family recipe, Greedy Goat for ice cream made from pedigree goat milk, and Neal?s Yard Dairy, which sources from 70 cheesemakers all over the UK and Ireland and ages them in its maturing rooms under the brick railway arches of Bermondsey, close by.?
  • Maltby Street, in Bermondsey, is a lesser-known alternative to Borough and the most recent addition to London?s market scene. Open Saturdays 9 a.m. - ?2 p.m., it has stalls tucked under railway arches. My picks: custard doughnuts and eccles cakes from St John Bakery, Polish sausage from Topolski, Alpine cheese from Mons and Monmouth Coffee Company, which is often credited to revolutionizing London?s coffee scene, for flat whites.?
  • In East London, not far from the Olympic stadium, Broadway Market is one of the city?s foremost hipster hangouts. The narrow street, which has hosted a market since the 1890s and has just been rebuilt, is lined with stalls on Saturdays, selling freshly shucked oysters, multiple types of olives, hand-filtered coffee and much more to a super trendy, creative crew. I always get a Vietnamese banh mi sandwich, and I have a pint of shandy (half-lemonade, half-lager) at the Cat & Mutton pub, which has been serving since the 1600s, afterwards.

Museums
Incredibly, most museums in London do not charge entry, although you will have to pay for special exhibitions???and there are some fantastic ones on over the summer. My museum musts include:

  • The British Museum, which has an extraordinary collection of historical objects from around the world, including Ancient Greece, Anglo Saxon England, Imperial China and much more. I used to be fascinated by the Egyptian Mummies as a child, and the museum?s most famous exhibit, the Rosetta Stone, which is inscribed with a decree in three languages: Ancient Egyptian, Demotic, and Ancient Greek, and has been on display since 1802.
  • The Natural History Museum, in South Kensington, is THE place to take the kids, particularly dinosaur-obsessed ones ??it?s a big hit with my 8-year-old nephew. There are hundreds of specimens on display, including life-size skeletons and four moving, animatronic dinosaurs ??don?t miss the terrifying T-Rex with 15cm teeth.?
  • Tate Modern on the buzzing South Bank of the Thames is currently hosting a Damien Hirst retrospective, which includes the bad boy British artist?s shark in formaldehyde, enough spot paintings to send you dotty, and a room of live butterflies (admission 14 GBP). The museum has the biggest collection of modern art in the country ? I love Matisse?s The Snail, and the Rothko room. Tate Britain, meanwhile, is a boat ride away in Millbank, and exhibits British art from 1500 to the present day: Turner, Whistler, Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud.??
  • Victoria & Albert Museum in South Kensington is the UK?s largest art and design museum, with wonderful fashion, jewelry (my favorite bit), glass, ceramics, architecture and more from different periods in history ??Renaissance, Rococo, Art Deco and much more ??from all over the globe. This summer it?s showing "Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950," a collection of dresses worn by royals and celebrities ? don?t miss Princess Diana?s Elvis Gown by Catherine Walker and look out for designs by Kate Middleton favorites Alexander McQueen and Jenny Packham ??if you?re inspired, her boutique is just down the road. ?

Parks
Spending time in London?s patchwork of parks and green spaces is one of the highlights of a visit to the city. Pack a picnic and pray for good weather. The parks will also be broadcasting Olympics events during the Games, although you?ll have to pay for a ticket.

  • Kensington Gardens is one of eight Royal Parks and one of the most beautiful, with formal avenues of trees, ornamental flowerbeds, the Peter Pan-themed Diana Memorial Playground, created in honor of the late princess, and the Serpentine Gallery, which features a new architect-designed pavilion every summer (Herzog and de Meuron designed this year?s). Make sure you check out Kate and William?s new gaff, Kensington Palace, which recently opened to the public.
  • Richmond Park is the largest Royal Park, at 2,500 acres ??three times bigger than Central Park ??and a national nature reserve. Among the park?s attractions are 650 free roaming deer; 144 species of bird, including woodpeckers, kestrels, owls and numerous waterfowl; bats; and 1,000 species of beetle. There are historic oaks in the wooded areas, ponds, ornamental gardens (don?t miss Isabella Plantation), hills and grassland. It?s a tube ride from the center of London: take the Richmond-bound District Line and get off at the very last stop.

From Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square to the River Thames, the venerable London exudes history.
