Tornado Damage at U. of Southern Miss. Is Estimated in Tens of Millions

More than 900 volunteers turned out on Wednesday to help clear debris from the campus. They gathered some 1,450 bags of trash and recovered some keepsakes, too, like an old photo album showing bygone cheerleaders and members of the Dixie Darlings, a drill team that performs with the marching band.

USM plans to resume classes Thursday, although 87 sections will be in temporary quarters. The tornado damaged eight or nine buildings at the southern edge of the school?s campus. One of those, a former fire station converted to house the jazz program, will have to be torn down.
