Despite an easy win over Philadelphia earlier on Sunday, the New York Giants were eliminated from playoff contention by virtue of the Chicago Bears' victory. The early results make Sunday night's Redskins and Cowboys clash an outright NFC East title game.
Coming into the final week of the regular season, the NFC East was the only division without a playoff team penciled in yet, but the picture got a little clearer this afternoon as the New York Giants were eliminated from contention. Now it comes down to Sunday night's matchup between the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys.
The Giants did their part to stay alive in the playoff race with a 42-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, but their slim hopes were quickly dashed. The Chicago Bears' 26-24 win over the Detroit Lions eliminated the defending Super Bowl champions from any chance at a title defense.
With the Giants out of the picture, tonight's matchup between the Redskins and Cowboys becomes an outright NFC East title game with the winner securing a playoff berth. Since the Bears won, there is no way for the Redskins to get into the postseason as a Wild Card, so the Sunday night game is a win-or-go-home contest for both teams.
The last time the two teams met was on Thanksgiving when Robert Griffin III threw four touchdowns in a 38-31 Redskins' victory.
Because of the playoff implications, the Redskins' game was flexed from an afternoon time slot into the national NBC Sunday Night Football window. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET from FedEx Field.
