Rural residents strike back at Lucas film empire (AP)

NICASIO, Calif. ? Marin County's planning commission will hear arguments for and against allowing filmmaker George Lucas to expand his movie-making empire in the quiet hills just north of San Francisco.

Some Marin County residents are balking at the planned 270,000-square-foot digital media production compound on historic farmland known as Grady Ranch. They worry the facility will constrain their lifestyle with additional noise, traffic and harmful environmental impacts on the pristine countryside.

But Lucasfilms officials insist the compound will be similar to the Skywalker Ranch, a sound facility hidden in hills for 32 years without complaint. They will hide the new digital filmmaking structure in the hills and work to mitigate traffic while protecting hundreds of acres from further development.

Both sides will face off at the planning commission on Feb. 27.

Woman pleads guilty in 1987 kidnapping of infant (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A woman who took a 19-day-old baby from a New York City hospital nearly a quarter century ago and raised the girl as her own pleaded guilty on Friday to a federal kidnapping charge.

Ann Pettway, 50, admitted in Manhattan federal court that on August 4, 1987, she kidnapped Carlina White, who had been brought to a Harlem hospital by her parents to be treated for a fever.

Pettway, dressed as a nurse, walked out of the hospital with the baby in her arms and caught a train back to her home in Bridgeport, Connecticut, according to the police account.

Pettway renamed the child Nejdra Nance, and raised the child as her own. White was a teenager when she began to suspect that Pettway was not her biological mother. When White asked Pettway for her birth certificate, Pettway told White she did not have it because she was given to her as an infant by a woman who used drugs, prosecutors said.

In 2010, White found a picture of a missing child in a database run by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that seemed to resemble her own baby pictures. Her hunch was eventually confirmed with the help of DNA testing, and in 2011 she was reunited with her biological parents, Joy White and Carl Tyson, who had since separated.

As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, Pettway agreed to plead guilty to a single charge of kidnapping that carries a sentencing guideline range of about 10 to 12-and-a-half years. Judge P. Kevin Castel is not obliged to accept the recommendation. The maximum sentence Pettway faces is life in prison.

Sentencing is due to take place on May 14. Pettway's lawyer, a public defender, did not respond to requests for comment on Friday.

Chronicle ? What are you capable of? | Arts & Entertainment ...

Chronicle (12A)

Directed by: Josh Trank, Starring: Dane DeHaan, Alex Russel, and Michael B. Jordan

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have super powers? If not, then either take a second and imagine, or, stop reading.? The sci-fi action film Chronicle puts a provocative spin on the hero formula that has captured audience?s imaginations for centuries.

From the minds of Director Josh Trank and Writer Max Landis comes the story of three high school students about to make a really powerful discovery. Shot as if from the point-of-view of a handheld camera, Chronicle has a Cloverfield-like feel that is more documentary than fantasy film. Thankfully, Director of Cinematography Matthew Jensen is able to pull this technique off without giving viewers a dizzying headache.

Upon leaving a party in an abandoned warehouse intellectual Matt Garetty (Alex Russell), student body president Steven Montgomery (Michael B. Jordan), and social reject Andrew Detmer ( Dane DeHaan) stumble upon a mysterious hole. The next day all three find they have powers with unexplored potential that they are anxious to document and explore, without any regards to the consequences. Although they know their lives will be changed forever, none of them are prepared for just how fast or how drastic that change will take place.? The development of each character succeeds in drawing viewers into the adventure.

The filming technique used allows an in-depth look into each of the unlikely trio?s lives. Centered on the troubled life of tortured soul Andrew Detmer, the story watches the creation of a monster. Like the mysterious trailers each suggested, the film asks audiences the challenging question, ?What are you capable of?? The dark theme makes one wonder whether or not you would be the good guy or the bad guy.

The performance of relatively young actor Dane DeHaan is terrifying, endearing, and brilliant. It is impossible not to feel the character?s pain. Both co-stars provide necessary balance with both humor and good intentions. This film successfully provides a fresh perspective on a theme that has been both well-done and butchered, time and time again.

As a film that sci-fi enthusiasts and the yet-to-be-converted can both enjoy, it is no big surprise that Chronicle has risen to the top of the box office since its release on February 1. So if you are looking to embark on an entertaining and thought-provoking adventure in an 84 minute window, Chronicle just might be for you.

TV anchor recovering from dog bite during segment

(AP) ? A television anchor who was bitten in the face by an 85-pound Argentine Mastiff during a live broadcast was released from a hospital on Thursday.

Kyle Dyer of KUSA-TV was bitten Wednesday while doing a story about the dog's rescue from an icy pond by a firefighter in suburban Lakewood.

Dyer was interviewing firefighter Tyler Sugaski and the dog's owner, Michael Robinson, when the dog, named Max, bit her on the face. Sugaski tended to Dyer in the studio until paramedics arrived and took her to the hospital.

KUSA reported Thursday (http://on9news.tv/wPZXRg) that Dyer was released from Denver Health Medical Center, where she had reconstructive surgery to her lip.

Robinson was cited with failure to have his dog on a leash ? Max was off-leash when he fell into the pond ? allowing his dog to bite, and failure to have a vaccinated dog. Robinson insisted that Max's vaccinations are up to date.

"Max is a gentle, loving, family dog," Robinson said. "This incident truly is unfortunate and does not reflect Max's disposition towards people."

"Our family and friends pray for a quick recovery and look forward to seeing Ms. Dyer back on-air soon," he said.

Max was impounded at the Denver Animal Shelter, where he was expected to be released back to his owner after a precautionary 10-day quarantine, said Doug Kelley, director of Denver Animal Care and Control.

"We're just checking where the dog has been to make sure there is no other (bite) history or anything else we need to know about," Kelley said.

Amazon ad pokes fun at cost of Apple's iPad (Digital Trends)

A new ad from Amazon attempts to make fun of the cost of Apple?s iPad by highlighting the cheaper price of its own mobile devices.

The 30-second ad takes place at a plush resort and involves an exchange between a bikini-clad woman (representing Amazon) and a slightly awkward-looking man (representing Apple).

The 30-second ad begins with the Apple guy walking past the woman, shielding his iPad from the sun. She?s reading a book on her Kindle e-reader. ?Best way to read, even in sunlight,? she says of her device.

The guy shoots back with something about not being able to watch movies on an e-reader, to which the woman points out her two children just across the way, watching movies on their Kindle Fire devices?albeit in the shade to reduce glare.

The guy tries again to talk up his iPad, which, incidentally, isn?t referred to by name in the ad. ?Three Kindles, that?s got to be expensive,? he says.

?Not really, together they?re still less than that,? replies the smiling woman, looking at the man?s tablet.

At this moment the man looks far more crestfallen than necessary, but hey, this is an Amazon ad hoping to persuade people that three cheap devices are better than a single pricey one.? To give you the exact figures, two Kindles and a Fire tablet will set you back $357, whereas Apple?s lowest-spec iPad costs $499.

But as the vast majority of consumers in the market for a tablet know by now, the iPad costs more than the Kindle Fire because it does more and has a lot more going on under the hood. For starters, the Fire has a smaller screen, no camera and less memory.

No doubt Apple will be flattered by the attention. More than 55 million iPads have been sold since its launch in April 2010 and up to now no company has been able to mount a serious challenge with an alternative device.

To its credit, Amazon is the first company since Apple to succeed in selling a tablet in any great number, having shifted somewhere in the region of six million units in just a few months. But the fact remains, the iPad and Fire are at opposite ends of the tablet spectrum and so it?s unlikely Amazon?s ad will have the effect of diverting the attention of those considering shelling out for Apple?s device.
